The Healthy Back Programme is a 6 or 8 week course designed to improve the lives of people suffering with long term back pain. I teach in local group classes, employee group classes within the workplace as part of occupational health/employee wellbeing, and one-to-one sessions.
It is a low impact, gentle movement class based on therapeutic yoga poses. The classes aim to help people gain greater range of movement in the whole body, greater freedom/flexibility/strength of spine, strength of supporting muscle groups, greater core strength and stability, as well as offering relaxation to help let go of spinal tension and negative thought patterns developed through long term pain. Above all, the classes are accessible, fun and friendly.
It is suitable for everyone, whether you have any experience of yoga and even if you are not currently taking any form of exercise. It is ideal for people who have chronic intermittent or permanent back pain (more than 12 weeks), and who have been advised by a health professional to seek appropriate exercise. It works well in conjunction with other forms of therapy, such as physiotherapy or osteopathy. A small amount of home practice is expected to get the most out of the programme.
