The chronic pain/trauma programme is a course designed to improve the lives of people suffering with long term pain or physical discomfort caused by trauma. I teach in small group classes, employee group classes within the workplace as part of occupational health/employee wellbeing, and one-to-one sessions.
It is a low impact, gentle movement class based on therapeutic yoga poses with an added element of mind/body therapy. The classes aim to help people gain greater range of movement in the whole body, greater freedom/flexibility/strength of spine, strength of supporting muscle groups, greater core strength and stability, as well as offering relaxation to help let go of physical tension and negative thought patterns developed through living with long term pain/trauma. Above all, the programme is designed to help participants let go of the fear of movement.
The classes are accessible, fun and friendly and suitable for everyone, whether you have any experience of yoga and even if you are not currently taking any form of exercise. It is ideal for people who have chronic intermittent or permanent pain (more than 12 weeks), and who have been advised by a health professional to seek appropriate exercise. It works well in conjunction with other forms of therapy, such as physiotherapy or pain counselling. A small amount of home practise is expected to get the most out of the programme.
